Players who have upgraded to either the PS5 or xbox series X|S can now take advantage of a major boost in performance in fortnite.

Beginning with the v15.10 update of season 5, players will now be able to enable 120 frames-per-second, providing a massive increase in performance from the previous 60 FPS cap.

Of course, having a 120 FPS TV isn’t quite the norm just yet, but if you’re somebody who has their console hooked up to a monitor that can push out these frames, then you can immediately start taking advantage of this.

Your game won’t immediately default to this mode as there are some drawbacks, so let’s take a look.

How to turn on 120 FPS

Currently, the xbox series X and PS5 are outputting fortnite at a full 4K resolution at 60 FPS, while the series S is 1080p and 60 FPS.

In order to hit 120 FPS, you’ll have to be okay with the resolution dropping from 4K to 1440p, while it’ll be outputting at 1200p on the series S. If this is a sacrifice you’re willing to make, then the door is open for you do so.

All you’ll have to do is head into your video settings in-game and toggle on the 120 FPS.

From there, you should be all set and be able to experience a whole new world of fortnite. Whether the consoles are able to maintain a locked 120 FPS remains to be seen, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

Is it worth it?

If you’re playing on your living room TV on at 60hz screen, then it really won’t matter if you switch the framerate.

At the end of the day, it’ll come down to personal preference, but any pro player would say that getting the highest framerate possible is what’s important.

This summer microsoft confirmed that halo infinite, the now-delayed flagship game of the xbox series X, would support 120fps gameplay in its multiplayer mode. That got us thinking - which other games have been confirmed to support the 120hz refresh rates of modern 4K tvs?

We did some research and this article is the result: a comprehensive list of all PS5 and xbox series X games that are set to exceed the traditional 60fps limit of consoles. As well as the game list, we've included what you need to know about the tech underpinning 4K 120hz televisions - HDMI 2.1 - and the best 4K tvs to choose for next-gen gaming.

While tvs are the focus here, as this is how most people will play on xbox series X or PS5, we've also covered the other option: high refresh rate monitors. These have been available for PC for a few years now, so we've included our recommendations for the best gaming monitors that support 120hz or higher refresh rates at a variety of resolutions. These start with currently available 1080p and 1440p models and end with the first monitor confirmed to ship with HDMI 2.1 support, allowing 120fps gaming at a full 4K resolution - perfect for next-gen.

OK. Before we get started, let's ask a simple question:

Why is 120fps better than 60fps?

Answer: the higher your frame-rate, the lower your input lag and the higher your temporal resolution.

Both of these side effects make it easier to play fast-paced games like shooters or racing games, as you'll be able to react sooner to the sudden appearance of an enemy or see the apex of a rapidly approaching corner more clearly. You can see this demonstrated in our "beyond 60fps" video, where higher game frame-rates and monitor refresh rates make fast-moving characters in counter-strike move more fluidly and appear on-screen sooner. In short, it just feels better.

High refresh rate monitors had a profound impact on PC gaming when they were introduced several years ago, and we expect a similar shift on console now that 120fps is on the table.

Of course, there's often a trade-off between higher frame-rates and improved visual fidelity. For games where fast action is uncommon, or where the developers want to emphasise the appearance of their world through a higher resolution and/or improved visual effects, sticking to a more traditional 30fps or 60fps target can make more sense.

Which PS5 and xbox series X games support 120fps?

Right now, we know about eight next-gen games with 120fps support on playstation 5 or xbox series X - and the spread is far from even.

While the PS5's design is ground-breaking in many ways, we've heard relatively little about which games will support 120fps. Right now, the list of 120fps PS5 games contains only a handful of entries, but it's sure to grow over time.

Note: the 49-inch Q80T has a 60hz panel instead of the 120hz panel used in the larger sizes. It also lacks support for variable refresh rates and suffers from worse viewing angles, so we recommend the 55-inch size or larger for most people.

Gaming monitors are also a great choice to pair with the PS5 or xbox series X, but be aware that - as of writing - no currently available models support the HDMI 2.1 standard. However, you should still be able to play at 120fps at lower resolutions, like 1080p and 1440p, using HDMI 2.0. Note that you may need to run with adaptive sync disabled to reach 144hz at 1440p. One benefit of this is that these monitors are considerably cheaper than 4K 120hz alternatives. The first 4K 120hz monitor announced to support HDMI 2.1 is the eve spectrum, linked below, and we expect more HDMI 2.1 monitors to arrive by the end of the year.

What is HDMI 2.1?

Put simply, HDMI 2.1 is a new standard that increases the amount of data that can flow through an HDMI cable. While the port looks the same as the HDMI we've been using for years, that increase in bandwidth requires new equipment: new cables, new source devices (eg next-gen consoles and graphics cards) and new receiving devices (eg new tvs and monitors). If everything in the chain supports HDMI 2.1, then you get several features.

The most important feature for our purposes is the ability to send more frames per second at a given resolution. On the earlier HDMI 2.0 standard, you can only send a 4K image 60 times per second. On HDMI 2.1 that doubles, so you can send a 4K image 120 times per second.

Other features include an auto low latency mode, prompting your TV to disable some of its processing in exchange for lower input lag, and support for variable refresh rates, which eliminate screen tearing and judder without the excessive input lag of simple v-sync. Variable refresh rate standards are their own topic, but implementations include HDMI VRR (built into the HDMI 2.1 standard), freesync (for AMD graphics cards) and G-sync (for nvidia graphics cards).

What's the difference between 120hz and 120fps?

Hertz (hz) refers to the number of times that a screen refreshes per second. The maximum refresh rate is an intrinsic part of each model of TV or monitor, with most tvs being limited to 60hz but some being capable of 120hz. Gaming monitors are also commonly available in 60hz and 120hz varieties, but even higher values - 144hz, 240hz and even 360hz are supported by some models.

Frames per second (fps) refers to the number of images that are being generated by the console or PC per second at a given time. This can be locked to a certain value, normally to keep new frames coming at a steady rate, or unlocked to allow for higher frame-rates in areas of the game that are less demanding to render.

Ideally, these two figures should be similar most of the time for you to benefit from the lower input lag and improved temporal resolution we mentioned earlier. For example, if your screen refreshes 120 times per second and your console provides 120 new frames every second, then you'll get the maximum benefit of each spec.

If your console can only provide 60fps, then you won't see any benefit from using a 120hz screen over a more commonly available 60hz one. Conversely, if your console can generate a steady 120fps but you don't have a 60hz screen, then you'll get a small boost to responsiveness* but not nearly as much as you would with a 120hz screen.

* why? Well, if your fps is significantly higher than your refresh rate, the average frame produced by your console should be more recently generated by the time the screen is ready to display it. Imagine going into a bakery that bakes bread six times a day versus going into one that bakes only once a day. Even if the time they bake is completely random and the time you go in is completely random, you're more likely to get a fresh loaf from the first bakery.

If you're interested in fast-paced games, then having a 120hz screen makes a lot of sense. Even in situations where your console is generating between 60 and 120fps, you'll still get a more responsive picture on a 120hz screen than on a 60hz one - and the closer to 120fps you get, the more fluid things will appear.

We're still a few months from the launch of either console, so we don't know how games will perform - even for games with 120fps targets, we could see a completely locked 120fps or frame-rates that dip quite a bit lower. However, the increase of processor and graphics power on both machines suggests that 120fps is a viable target, and we're excited to see how things shake out.

What about xbox series S?

In theory, the xbox series S should run any 120fps xbox series X games at a similar frame-rate but at a lower resolution. However, most developers haven't detailed exact performance, so we'll have to see how things go as we get closer to launch.

Fasting blood sugar levels give vital clues about how a person’s body is managing blood sugar. Blood sugar tends to peak about an hour after eating and declines after that.

High fasting blood sugar levels point to insulin resistance or diabetes, while abnormally low fasting blood sugar could be due to diabetes medications.

Knowing when to test and what to look for can help keep people stay healthy, especially if they have diabetes or are at risk of developing the condition.

The body needs glucose for energy, and glucose comes from the food we eat. However, the body does not use all of this energy at once. Insulin makes it possible to store and release it as necessary.

Following a meal, blood sugar levels rise, usually peaking about an hour after eating.

How high blood sugar rises, and the precise timing of the peak depends on the person’s diet.

Factors relating to food that can trigger significant rises include:

Eating large meals

Consuming sugary foods and drinks

Eating foods with simple carbohydrates, or carbs, such as bread and sweet snacks

As blood sugar rises, the pancreas releases insulin. Insulin lowers blood sugar, breaking it down so that the body can use it for energy or store it for later.

However, people who have diabetes have difficulties with insulin in one of two ways:

1. Those with type 1 diabetes do not produce enough insulin because their body attacks its insulin-producing cells.

2. Those with type 2 diabetes do not respond well to insulin in their body and, later, may not make enough insulin.

In both cases, the result is the same, with people experiencing high blood sugar levels and difficulty using glucose, or blood sugar.

This means that fasting blood sugar depends on three factors:

The contents of a person’s last meal

The size of their previous meal

Their body’s ability to produce and respond to insulin

Blood sugar levels between meals offer a window into how the body manages sugar. High levels of fasting blood sugar suggest that the body has been unable to lower the levels of sugar in the blood.

This points to either insulin resistance or inadequate insulin production and, in some cases, both.

When blood sugar is very low, diabetes medications may be lowering blood sugar too much.

There are two methods that individuals or healthcare professionals use for assessing fasting blood sugar levels:

1. A conventional blood sugar test

2. A glycosylated hemoglobin (hba1c) test

The hba1c test

The hba1c test measures how the body is managing blood sugar over time, usually the last 2–3 months.

The person will undertake this test at the doctor’s office or in a lab. If levels are very high, the individual may need a second test. The results show as a percentage.

Hba1c is the main test that doctors use to manage diabetes.

Blood sugar testing at home

A person can test their blood sugar levels at home.

In most cases, doctors ask people to measure fasting blood sugar immediately upon waking and before they have anything to eat or drink. It may also be appropriate to test blood sugar before eating or sometimes 2 hours after a meal when blood sugar has returned to normal levels.

The right time to test is dependant on treatment goals and other factors. For example, most people with diabetes do not need to test between meals unless they are using a diabetes drug that can lower blood sugar. Other people may test between meals if they feel their sugar levels may be low.

Since they do not make any insulin, some people with type 1 diabetes need to test several times a day. They do this because they need to check their levels regularly in order to adjust their insulin dose at that time.

To do the blood sugar test, a person will:

Prepare the testing strip and glucose monitor to be ready for the blood sample.

Clean the testing area, usually the side of a fingertip, using an alcohol swab.

Lance the testing area. Bracing against a firm surface can help with the impulse to pull away.

Squeeze the testing area around the wound to maximize blood flow.

Squeeze a drop of blood onto the test strip.

Put the strip into the monitor.

Record the time, blood sugar reading, and recent food intake in a log.

Continuous glucose monitoring

Another option for daily use is continuous glucose monitoring (CGM).

For CGM, a person wears a monitor 24 hours a day. The monitor records their blood glucose levels on an ongoing basis.

CGM can give a more accurate picture of a person’s levels and fluctuations throughout the day. However, this type of kit is more expensive to buy.

There are also non-fasting blood tests.

Random plasma glucose (RPG): the doctor does a conventional blood sugar test when the person is not fasting. Find out more here.

Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT): A healthcare provider takes samples of a person’s blood several times. The analysis begins with a fasting blood test. The individual with diabetes then drinks a liquid containing glucose, and the healthcare provider draws their blood every hour, three times. Learn more here about the glucose tolerance test.

Blood sugar levels vary throughout the day and with food intake, so no single blood sugar reading can reveal how well or not someone is processing sugar.

Hba1c results

According to the american diabetes association (ADA), the results of an hba1c test will be one of the following:

Normal: less than 5.7 percent

Prediabetes: between 5.7 and 6.4 percent

Diabetes: 6.5 and over

Prediabetes is when blood sugar is high but not as high as in diabetes. People can take measures that may reverse it and stop diabetes from developing. Find out more here.

Home testing

Target blood sugar numbers are as follows, in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl):

Fasting (morning testing before food or water): 80–130 mg/dl

Two hours after starting a meal: under 180 mg/dl

However, the target numbers will vary between individuals. A healthcare professional will help a person identify their own target levels.

It is vital to follow a healthful diet to keep fasting blood sugar from rising too high. Strategies include:

Limiting the intake of sugar and salt.

Choosing whole-grain bread and pasta instead of white bread and pasta.

Eating foods that are rich in fiber to help the body lower blood glucose levels.

Eating high-protein foods to support feelings of fullness.

Choosing non-starchy vegetables that are less likely to trigger blood glucose spikes.

People who are taking diabetes drugs and who are at risk of dangerous blood sugar dips should follow a similar diet. They also need to take proactive steps to prevent blood sugar from dropping. Those include:

Eating regular meals throughout the day.

Increasing food intake and snacking frequency during intense physical activity.

Avoiding or limiting alcohol beverages.

Consulting a doctor if vomiting or diarrhea make it difficult to manage blood sugar.

People are likely to experience symptoms if their blood sugar levels are too low or too high.

Low blood sugar levels

Blood sugar that is too low can cause symptoms such as:

Shaking and sweating

Feeling jittery

Difficulty concentrating

Lack of energy

Pale skin

Fatigue or tiredness

Headaches or muscle aches

Fast or irregular heartbeat

Weakness

Lack of coordination

In extreme cases, low blood sugar can trigger seizures, loss of consciousness, confusion, and the inability to drink or eat.

Very high blood sugar, or hyperglycemia, can cause the following symptoms:

Increased hunger or thirst

Excessive urination

Blurred vision

Headache

Tiredness

As with low blood sugar, high blood sugar may cause loss of consciousness or seizures if people leave them untreated. Persistent high levels can increase the risk of serious complications that doctors relate to diabetes, such as cardiovascular disease.

If a person’s blood sugar levels are high more than three times in a 2-week period without an apparent reason, the national institute for diabetes and digestive and kidney diseases (NIDDK) recommend that they seek medical help.

Any significant change in blood sugar patterns warrants a visit to a doctor. People with diabetes and those at risk of diabetes should also consult a doctor if:

Blood sugar levels become unusually high or low

Well-managed blood sugar levels are suddenly start fluctuating

People have new or worsening symptoms of diabetes

They change their medication or stop using it

They experience abnormally high blood pressure

They develop an infection or sore that will not heal

Diabetes needs ongoing monitoring, and the treatment can change over time. Information about diet and exercise is vital to enable a doctor to outline a proper treatment plan for each person individually.

People with diabetes can assist their doctor by keeping detailed logs and being transparent and accurate about dietary or lifestyle changes.

Fortnite: how to enable 120 FPS on PS5 & xbox series X | S

Fortnite on next-gen has already drastically up the game for those playing on consoles with the PS5 and xbox series X | S versions both bringing significant performance and visual changes. With v15.10, players on the new consoles can now also enable 120 FPS in fortnite.

It comes with a couple of caveats, though. Resolution is lowered from 4K to 1440p in 120 FPS, and various quality settings will also be impacted, so the game won’t look anywhere near as next-gen as previously. It’s even worse for series S players, who will get just 1080p and visual effects like shadows also getting reduced in quality.

If you’re happy with all of that, you can take advantage of double the amount of frames in fortnite. To do so, go to settings > visual and then enable the 120 FPS mode listed there.

Don’t see the option for 120 FPS? That will be because your display, whether that’s a PC monitor or TV, doesn’t a support 120 HZ refresh rate, which is the output you need to actually see those 120 frames per second. If you’re playing on series X | S, you have to make sure you’ve enabled 120 HZ in your console’s display settings as well.

As for where you can get a compatible display, you’re probably going to want a TV if you’re playing on console, but 120 HZ televisions are unfortunately very overpriced right now and even harder to find. This is especially true if you want a large 4K TV to play on too, so we recommend waiting before you purchase a 120 HZ display. Unless you’re super competitive, 120 frames on console isn’t feasible for most just yet.

So let’s look at a blood sugar chart, then have a chat about optimal levels.

As you can see from this chart, a level of 6.6/ 120 is not too high.

Ideally you do want it under 110 (6.1) for your morning fasting level. But lots of people do find their morning levels higher. Read this to find out why.

You can also see that having a 120 (6.6) reading 2 hours after meals would be excellent and before bed a reading of 120 (6.6) is in the mid range too, so that’s perfectly okay.

The most important number

The most important number to keep in mind is 140 (7.8).

You do not want to let your blood sugar levels get above 140 (7.8) for any prolonged length of time.

When your blood sugar goes over 140 (7.8) this is the ‘danger’ level. Having a blood sugar above 140 (7.8) for prolonged periods does some critical damage that can lead to diabetic complications, which nobody wants.

So the target is always under 140 (7.8) after meals, 120 (6.6) is even better.

6.6 / 120 blood sugar level

Although 120 is not too high, ideally you do want to gain very good control of your blood sugar levels by following a healthy diet and doing regular exercise.

If you can get your fasting level between 90-100 mg/dl (5-5.5 mmol/l), and your 2 hour reading between 120-140 mg/dl (6.6-7.8 mmol/l) then that is optimal.

These are goals to work towards.

PS5’s 120 FSP performance mode explained

The first thing you’ll need to do is head into the settings from your PS5’s home screen. This can be done by selecting the little cog in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

From here, you then want to go down to the ‘saved data and game/ app settings’ option.

Now you want to scroll down to ‘game presets’ on the sidebar, and you should now see a ‘performance mode or resolution mode’ option.

If you’re all about enabling 120 FPS on PS5, then you want to change this to performance mode.

Selecting this will cause games like fortnite and call of duty black ops: cold war to run at 120 FPS. This is also the case for any game that has a 120 FPS option available in-game.

Keep in mind, however, that running games at 120 FSP on PS5 will have a negative effect on how your game looks visually. Your resolution might not be quite as sharp, dropping down from a native 4K to something possibly closer to a 1080p image.

If you’re after that silky smooth gameplay however, or don’t have a display to make the most of a native 4K image, then performance mode is definitely for you.

Once you’ve changed this setting, you’ll be all set to enjoy your games at a blistering 120 frames per second. Keep in mind that some titles, such as black ops: cold war, do require players to disable options such as ray tracing in-game to enable this option, too.

How to set your PS5 to display 4K

According to playstation support, the PS5 should select the best available resolution during start-up. However, if there's been a mistake somewhere down the line, it's also possible to manually change your PS5 resolution.

Here's how to make sure you have 4K enabled:

From the playstation 5 dashboard, head up to settings in the top right corner

Press X to select, then choose screen and video

Next, select video output

From here, make sure your output is set to 4K

Of course, bear in mind that 4K resolutions are only possible on a monitor capable of displaying such high-quality images. If you don't have a TV or monitor that's able to display 4K, it won't be possible to go higher than your screen's resolution.

How to set your PS5 to run at 120 FPS

Next up, those that want their PS5 to be running at 120 FPS will require a monitor capable 120hz. Although, as sony points out, few options are out there as most tvs are not yet running at 4K and 120hz.

As a tradeoff, players can select a lower frame rate for their gameplay instead of focusing on resolution. Users will also have to make sure they're using the included HDMI 2.1 cable with their PS5 to take advantage of the console's true potential too.

In the saved data and game/app settings, players can also choose between the PS5's performance or resolution modes. To get 120 FPS in your games, make sure you're running on performance mode.

The resolution, and the playstation's ray-tracing capabilities, may take a hit. However, it will be worth it for an exceptionally smooth next-gen frame rate.

Developers have the option of targeting different refresh rates and resolutions, so this list is sure to grow. Microsoft has previously discussed how some backward compatible titles can have their framerates doubled on the xbox series X and xbox series S, meaning that in theory some 60FPS games may run at 120FPS on the new consoles. This is an evolution of the heutchy method first used on xbox one X.

As yet, we do not have a list of the games that will benefit from these enhancements. So far, the technology has been shown with fallout 4 running at 60 FPS without developer input.

Outside of this tech test, we don't have much information. According to director of PM for xbox jason ronald, this feature is coming at some point after launch, so we're expecting more details over the next few months. Some of them may end up being among the best xbox games available.

Why is 120 FPS gaming better?

So far, console games have aimed to hit a maximum of 60 FPS, with most locking at 30 FPS. 60 frame rates per second means that the visual frame updates once every sixtieth of a second, or in other words, the animation can update its position 60 times in one second. If you double the frame rates per second, the rate at which the animation can move is also doubled, leading to shorter steps and more natural movement — at higher FPS, you get more visual information and smoother gameplay.

Besides, smoothness in animation, higher FPS also reduces ghosting (the blurriness that you see trailing behind moving objects) and tearing (visual information from multiple frames mixed in a single shot).

Finally, gaming at 120 FPS means reduced system latency (input lag) and hence a more responsive gaming experience. This becomes crucial in competitive multiplayer shooters and racing games where quick reactions make all the difference.

The trade-offs of 120 FPS console gaming

Computing resources are not unlimited, so compromises are inevitable. Higher frame rates lead to smoother gaming experience but they also mean that the console will have fewer resources left for visual enhancement. What does 120fps mean?

The "fps" in that bit of technical lingo stands for "frames-per-second", and refers to how quickly a console can output visual frames while you play - it's fairly self-explanatory in that way.

So, a game that can run at 120fps is outputting 120 frames-per-second, which makes for extremely smooth and responsive visual performance. For context, even 60fps has only recently started to become standard on consoles. Big series, like call of duty and assassin's creed, target 60 FPS on current-gen consoles, so 120fps is quite a step up.

That smoothness can mean that some visual corners have to be cut in order to keep things running, so might mean that there's less detail or fewer effects. How to manage that balance is up to individual developers.

Does 120fps work on all tvs?

The biggest complication when it comes to 120fps is that it won't work on every TV set, sadly. If you've got a newer TV, one with a panel that supports a 4K 120hz reresh rate (another, more TV-centric way of saying 120fps), then you'll be fine. You might have a TV that only supports 1080p 120hz, but that will be largely fine too, as most of the initial games will struggle to output full 4K at 120fps.

Most tvs older than a couple of years, however, only allow for up to 60hz refresh rates, and these won't be able to take advantage of 120fps. The TV simply can't quite keep up with the console's output. It'll still look nice and smooth with 60fps, but not quite to the same extent.
